    I have been using my digital certificate as an authentication means for access to the Inland Revenue Department’s online services. I have just received my Tax Return – Individuals for the current year. How can I use the Internet filing service?
    Ans

    Before using Internet filing service, you must open an eTAX Account by visiting www.gov.hk/etax and completing a simple registration process.

  • Q4.
    My spouse does not have any file with the Inland Revenue Department but he/she has to sign my electronic Tax Return – Individuals to nominate me to claim deduction for Home Loan Interest. Can he/she apply an eTAX Password for such purpose? If so, how?
    Ans

    Yes, your spouse can download the form IR6169, complete and return it to the Inland Revenue Department.  He/she will then be advised of his/her Taxpayer Identification Number and Access Code by post for opening his/her eTAX Account.

     Alternatively, after filing the return, you may print the letter  "Spouse nomination to claim for deduction for home loan interest" through the link provided in the Acknowledgement screen for your spouse's signature.

    Can my authorized tax representative file the tax return on my behalf through the Internet?
    Ans

    The eTAX services are for the sole and exclusive use by the Taxpayer.  At no time and under no circumstances shall the Taxpayer authorize any other person to use his/her TIN, eTAX Password, MyGovHK Username/Password, digital certificate or “iAM Smart" account to communicate with the Inland Revenue Department on his/her behalf in connection with the eTAX services.

    Some parts of the tax return are not displayed for my completion. How can I complete those parts?
    Ans

    You can click [Select PARTS of Return] at the navigation bar so as to select part(s) of the tax return requiring completion.

    What kind of data will be pre-filled in my electronic tax return?
    Ans

    Electronic tax returns for individuals are pre-filled with certain basic data relating to the taxpayers concerned, including personal particulars, employment particulars (and income amount if applicable), the tax deduction records saved under the e-service of 'Records for pre-filling deduction claims under Tax Return - Individuals' etc. It remains the taxpayers' responsibilities to amend or update any such pre-filled data and ensure that all details furnished in the tax returns are correct.

    How can I amend the pre-filled data in my electronic tax return?
    Ans

    You can click the [Clear Employment X] to clear data pre-filled for Employment X, the [Clear] button to clear all data displayed or simply type over the pre-filled data so as to enter the correct data.

    If space provided on electronic tax return is insufficient, how can I provide supplementary information?
    Ans

    You can click the [Supplement] button to access the screen of 'Supplementary Information on Tax Return' and input the relevant information.

    Can I save a partially completed tax return for further completion and submission later?
    Ans

    Yes, you can do so by clicking the [Save and Quit] button to save a partially completed return, which will be retained for four months.

    How can I sign my return during the Internet filing process?
    Ans

    You can sign your tax return with your eTAX Password, MyGovHK Password (Note), recognized digital certificate or “iAM Smart" account with digital signing function.

    (Note: only applicable for cases login via MyGovHK Account using MyGovHK Username and Password)

    How can I sign the Tax Return - Individuals online if I have changed my existing eTAX password or created my eTAX password after receiving the eTAX Access Code Notice?
    Ans

    If you have changed/created your eTAX Password, you must use the new eTAX password to sign the tax return. You can also sign your tax return with your MyGovHK Password, recognized digital certificate or “iAM Smart” account with digital signing function.

    How do I know that I have successfully filed my return through the Internet? Can I view details of the return after filing?
    Ans

    Immediately after a tax return has been successfully filed through the Internet, an acknowledgement will be provided on the screen.  You can also view details of the return under Tax Return in the Tax Position Section.

  • Q14.
    Can I view a computation of my estimated Salaries Tax liability before submission of my return? How is the estimated liability calculated?
    Ans

    Yes, you can do so by clicking the [Compute Estimated Salaries Tax Payable] button before you submit the Tax Return. The amount of tax payable is entirely based on information provided in your tax return and no account will be taken of any election for Joint Assessment / Personal Assessment and information provided in the text box of Supplementary Information on Tax Return in calculating the estimated Salaries Tax payable.

    Can I view a computation of my estimated Salaries Tax liability immediately after submission of my return? How is the estimated liability calculated?
    Ans

    Yes, you can do so by clicking the [Compute Estimated Salaries Tax Payable] button at the bottom of the Acknowledgement screen. You can also view the computation under Tax Return in the Tax Position Section. Computation of Estimated Salaries Tax Payable is also available before submission of your Tax Return. The computation of Estimated Salaries Tax Payable is intended for the reference of the taxpayer and to help him / her make payment plan early.  The amount of tax payable is entirely based on information provided in his / her tax return.  Please also note that no account will be taken of any election for Joint Assessment / Personal Assessment and information provided in the text box of Supplementary Information on Tax Return in calculating the estimated Salaries Tax payable.

  • Q16.
    Are computations for estimated Property Tax or Profits Tax payable available?
    Ans

    No.  Both Property Tax and Profits Tax are computed by applying the standard rate and can be estimated easily.

  • Q17.
    I have filed my return through the Internet. How can I rectify an error in that return or make supplement to it subsequently?
    Ans

    You can make the rectification through the “Contact Us” Section on the left menu of the screens after you login your eTAX Account.  After pressing the [Yes] and [Continue] buttons, please select the box “Return Supplement for the Year of Assessment xxxx/xx” and state clearly in “Details of Enquiry” the amendments or supplement you wish to make to the return.  Alternatively, you can submit a duly signed written notice to the Commissioner with particulars including your name, file number, the relevant year of assessment and details of amendments or supplement .  You should not use a paper Tax Return for this purpose.

    Are the data in a tax return filed through the Internet secure?
