Applying online for Certificate of Absence of Marriage Record

If you need to apply for a certificate of absence of marriage record, you can use the Immigration Department’s online service. This article will give you the details.

How and Where to Apply

To apply for a certificate of absence of marriage record, you are required to complete an application form and pay the prescribed fee for a search of marriage record.

If the search result shows that you have no marriage record in Hong Kong, a certificate of absence of marriage record will be issued on payment of the prescribed fee. Otherwise, a letter of marriage record indicating the date(s) of your previous marriage(s) will be issued.

If all necessary documents and fees are received upon application, it normally takes nine working days (Monday to Friday excluding General Holidays).

Collection of Certificate of Absence of Marriage Record

As the search of records will take time, the result will not be immediately available online. You or an authorised representative will be asked to select a Marriage Registry for collection of the result in person.

When you complete the online application, the collection date will be shown on the acknowledgement receipt. Please remember to print or save the acknowledgement receipt, or write down the application reference, collection date and selected registry for collection. You are required to produce the printout or provide the application reference number as well as other necessary documents upon collection at your selected Marriage Registry.

The uncollected search result and / or the certificate concerned will be cancelled six months after the date of application.

Supporting Documents to be Produced on Collection

When you collect your result from the selected Marriage Registry of the Immigration Department, you will need to produce the following supporting documents:

  • Hong Kong Identity Card or valid travel document
  • Printout of online application acknowledgement

If you are an authorised representative, apart from the documents mentioned above, you will also need to produce the following supporting documents:

  • Your Hong Kong Identity Card or valid travel document
  • Original copy of the authorisation letter
  • Evidence supporting that the data subject is outside Hong Kong or that he/she is in Hong Kong but unable to collect the result in person
  • Copy of the data subject’s travel document bearing his/her personal data and signature and properly certified by a Notary Public (applicable if the data subject’s travel document was not issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department)
