As at 29 February 2008, there were more than 6,400 public Wi-Fi hotspots in Hong Kong covering over 4,100 locations. From 27 March 2008 to mid-2009, GovWiFi will provide free Wi-Fi service at some 350 government premises in phases. It will put in place about 2,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots in the territory and make Hong Kong a wireless city with nearly 10,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots by 2009.

The successful implementation and rollout of GovWiFi would not have been possible without the contribution of the GovWiFi service provider, the ICT industry especially the Legislative Councillor from the IT Functional Constituency and a number of bureaux/departments rendering venues for installing the Wi-Fi facilities.
