Next Generation Government Wi-Fi Programme
The Government Wi-Fi (GovWiFi) Programme was launched in 2008 to provide free Wi-Fi Internet access services to the public at selected government premises of high public patronage. It has been well received by citizens. Currently, the service is available at around 400 government premises with over 2,000 hotspots installed in these premises.
The Next Generation GovWiFi Programme will succeed the existing programme upon expiry of the current service contract at the end of 2012. The new Programme will enhance the service including:
- extend to about 40 new premises, where there is strong public demand for GovWiFi service;
- adopt the latest version of Wi-Fi technology standard (802.11n), which provides better signal coverage, enables faster data transfer and reduces signal interference;
- upgrade the network to include the support of the new Internet communication standard (IPv6) to enable the public to access new services delivered through IPv6; and
- enhance the GovWiFi web portal to facilitate the provision of more tailored and a greater number of e-government services and contents to the public.
