Biodiversity in China – An Exhibition on China's Wildlife Specimens

Date of Event:18 December 2009 to 31 August 2010

China boasts a vast area with diverse landforms, complex river networks, numerous lakes and extreme climate regimes. It has provided favourable natural conditions for the formation and development of a variety of biological and ecological systems, making it one of the countries with the richest biodiversity in the world. To introduce the richness of plant and animal species of China, the Hong Kong Science Museum will present an exhibition on "Biodiversity in China – An Exhibition on China's Wildlife Specimens" from 18 December 2009 to 31 August 2010. The specimens are provided by Chongqing Natural History Museum. Over 400 wildlife specimens originated from the Yangtze River Basin and western China are displayed under categories of river fishes, commercial fishes, amphibians, reptiles, wetland birds, alpine birds, forest mammals, alpine mammals, insects and plants. Together with environmental settings, these specimens reflect the unique characteristics of various natural habitats in China.

This is the first time the specimens are on display in Hong Kong. Many of them are endangered species unique to China and are under first class or second class state protection, such as the Giant Panda, Snub-nosed Monkey, Chinese Sturgeon, White Stork, tiger, Takin, Baiji, Chinese Alligator, Chinese Three-tailed Swallowtail and plant species such as Dawn Redwood, Dove tree and Fakienia. The United Nations has declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity. It is hoped that by viewing this exhibition, visitors would better appreciate the interactions between different kinds of animals in the natural environment, and understand the importance of conservation of wildlife habitats.
