Consultation on Enhancements to Deposit Protection Scheme

Brief Description : The proposals aim at enhancing the Deposit Protection Scheme (DPS) by speeding up the determination of compensation to depositors when there is a bank failure.  The major proposed enhancement is to adopt gross payout (i.e. a depositor will be compensated an amount up to the DPS protection limit, currently, $500,000, without the need of set-off the depositor’s liabilities against his/her protected deposits in the same bank).

Public Consultation on Future Fuel Mix for Electricity Generation

Brief Description : As the existing coal-fired generating units will start to retire in the coming years and the electricity supply infrastructure requires long-term planning, the Government has carried out the review on the future fuel mix for electricity generation in a timely manner, in order to meet the future electricity demand of Hong Kong and to improve the environment.  A three-month public consultation was also launched on 19 March 2014.  Two fuel mix options were put forward for public consultation, including (a) “grid purchase”, under which we proposed importing electricity through purchase from the Mainland power grid; and (b) “local generation”, under which we proposed using more natural gas for local generation.

Public Engagement on Municipal Solid Waste Charging of the Council for Sustainable Development

Brief Description : Relevant stakeholders and the public would be engaged in informed discussions and dialogue with a view to arriving at consensus on identified key issues and feasible solutions on how the quantity-based municipal solid waste charging scheme may be implemented in Hong Kong, which would include the charging mechanism, the charging principle, the implementation details, and barriers, etc.  The general public would be educated and informed about the importance of behavioral changes to achieve waste reduction at source which would be conducive to the sustainable development in Hong Kong.
