Online Booking for Driving Tests

Important Notice 1 : From 4 December 2023, applicants who wish to apply for the Private Car / Light Goods Vehicle driving test and Motor Cycle Part C Test (Road Test) for the first time can submit their application via the website of Online Booking for Driving Tests (www.gov.hk/drivingtest). Additionally, candidates may also submit an application for postponement / temporary cancellation of driving test / change in test region via the website (except for applications for postponement on medical grounds).  For details, please refer to the relevant web pages.

Important Notice 2 : From 25 September 2023, the latest updates in road traffic related legislation, driving rules and information will be included in the scope of Part A Test (Written Test) and Taxi Written Test. The updates will be uploaded to the website of Transport Department. (https://www.td.gov.hk/en/public_services/licences_and_permits/driving_test/wt/sowt/index.html) The new arrangement will apply to candidates who are scheduled to take the Part A Test (Written Test) and the Taxi Written Test on and after 6 November 2023. Candidates taking the Part A Test (Written Test) or the Taxi Written Test should be conversant with the relevant test materials before taking the test.

Important Notice 3 : The website of Online Booking for Driving Tests is scheduled for maintenance from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on 1 April 2024 (Monday). We apologize for any inconvenience caused. 

To obtain a full driving licence in Hong Kong, you need to pass a driving test.  You can now book a driving test online if you need to take or retake the Part A Test (Written Test), road test for non-commercial vehicles / commercial vehicles or Taxi Written Test.  Candidates with a valid driving test form and scheduled a test appointment at the Non-designated Driving School Driving Test Centres (including both written test and road test) of any vehicle type can also apply for Postponement / Temporary Cancellation of Driving Test / Change in Test Region (except application for postponement on medical grounds) via the website. Online Booking for Driving Tests

@ “End-of-list Appointment” refers to the latest appointment date of various driving test types.  You may visit the Department’s website of “Waiting Time of Driving Tests” for the updated end-of-list appointment date and waiting time for different vehicle and test types at different tests region.

# The repeater early test vacant test slots are allotted by computer balloting.  Eligible candidates are required to register for the balloting via this online booking system or telephone hotline (2866 8148).  Ballot winners are required to select their test slot during a specific period on the same day after the ballot.  For more details of Application for Repeater Early Test Appointment, please visit the Department’s website of “Repeater Early Test Appointment Booking Service”.

* Eligible candidates can apply for Postponement / Temporary Cancellation of Driving Test / Change in Test Region through this e-service at least 7 clear days before the test. For more details, please visit the Department’s website.

If you have any physical disabilities, you should attend a driving ability assessment(s) before applying for a driving test.  Please dial 2713 7262 to make an appointment for the assessment if necessary.

Please note that the Online Booking for Driving Tests service will be suspended from 12:00 a.m. to 8:59 a.m. every day for regular updates.  The relevant services will resume normal at 9:00 a.m.

In addition, there may be scheduled maintenance for the online booking system. The time for service suspension and resumption will be announced in advance on the booking service webpage and through the telephone booking hotline.  You are advised to pay attention to the relevant notice.  In the event of emergent system failure, the Department may not be able to issue the maintenance notice (including the estimated service resumption time) via the online booking service webpage and the telephone booking hotline.  You are advised to watch out for the progress of maintenance through the booking service webpage and the telephone booking hotline.

Eligible Applicants

Application for Driving Test Appointment (End-of-list Appointment)

Non-commercial

1. Fresh Applicants of Private Car or Light Goods Vehicle Driving Test

  • Must be aged 18 or above.

2. Fresh Applicants of Motor Cycle Part C Test (Road Test)

  • Must be aged 18 or above; AND
  • Have passed the Part B Test (Competence Test) within 2 years immediately preceding the application, or currently hold / have previously held a learner’s driving licence for Motor Cycle.

3. Repeaters of Private Car, Light Goods Vehicle or Motor Cycle Road Test:

  • Failed or partially passed in the last road test; and who intend to apply for retaking the failed part (for example: if a candidate has failed a Private Car Combined Test, he / she could apply for an end-of-list appointment of Private Car Combined Test online. However, the candidate is not eligible to book an end-of-list appointment for Private Car (Part B / C), Light Goods Vehicle or Motor Cycle road test).

Commercial

1. Fresh Applicants for Medium Goods Vehicle, Heavy Goods Vehicle, Private / Public Bus, Private / Public Light Bus and Articulated Vehicle Road Test or Taxi Written Test:

  • Must be aged 21 or above; AND
  • Must be either a holder of a valid full driving licence for Private Car or Light Goods Vehicle for at least 1 year immediately preceding their applications (if their full driving licences were obtained without undergoing a probationary driving period), or have completed a probationary driving period of Private Car or Light Goods Vehicle of at least 1 year and are holding a valid full driving licence for Private Car or Light Goods Vehicle on the date of application; AND
  • Have not been convicted of any specified serious traffic offence in the 5 years immediately preceding the application.

2. Repeaters of Medium Goods Vehicle, Heavy Goods Vehicle, Private / Public Bus, Private / Public Light Bus and Articulated Vehicle Road Test or Taxi Written Test:

  • Failed in the last relevant commercial vehicle road test or taxi written test; AND
  • Have not been convicted of any specified serious traffic offence in the 5 years immediately preceding the application.

The following candidates are not allowed to apply for an end-of-list appointments through this online service:

  • You do not satisfy the eligibility criteria above.
  • You are aged 70 or above.
  • You have physical handicap, is suffering from any disease or physical disability as specified in the First Schedule to the Road Traffic (Driving Licences) Regulations, or need to wear hearing aid when driving.
  • You have obtained the probationary / full driving licence of the relevant vehicle type.
  • You are a repeater who applies fewer than 4 working days after the date of your last driving test (except Taxi written test applicant).
  • You have been allotted a repeater early test appointment of the relevant driving test.

Application for Repeater Early Test Appointment

Non-commercial

Repeaters of Private Car or Light Goods Vehicle or Motor Cycle Road Test:

  • Failed or partially passed in the last road test; and who intend to apply for retaking the failed part (for example: if a candidate has failed a Private Car Combined Test, he / she could register for the balloting for Private Car Combined Test. However, the candidate is not eligible to register for the balloting for Private Car (Part B / C), Light Goods Vehicle or Motor Cycle road test).

Commercial

Repeaters of Medium Goods Vehicle, Heavy Goods Vehicle, Private / Public Bus, Private / Public Light Bus and Articulated Vehicle Road Test:

  • Failed in the last commercial vehicle road test; AND
  • Have not been convicted of any specified serious traffic offence in the 5 years immediately preceding the application.

The following candidates are not allowed to apply for a repeater early test appointment under this online service if:

  • You do not satisfy the eligibility criteria above.
  • You are a repeater who submits your application less than 4 working days after the date of your last driving test.
  • Your full driving licence expired more than 3 years ago.
  • You have already purchased a test form for the relevant driving test.

Application for Postponement / Temporary Cancellation of Driving Test / Change in Test Region

  • Have held a valid driving test form and scheduled a test appointment at the Government Driving Test Centres (including both written test and road test) of all vehicle types;
  • The current test date is a least 7 clear days from now (the day of the scheduled test and the day when the application is received are excluded).

The following candidates are not allowed to apply for Postponement / Temporary Cancellation of Driving Test / Change in Test Region if:

  • You do not satisfy the above eligibility criteria.
  • You apply for postponement on medical grounds or other uncontrollable reasons.
  • You are aged 70 or above.
  • You have physical handicap, is suffering from any disease or physical disability as specified in the First Schedule to the Road Traffic (Driving Licences) Regulations, or need to wear hearing aids when driving.
  • You apply less than 7 clear days before the test.
  • You have held a driving test appointment at the Designated Driving Schools / a specially arranged written test appointment (e.g. Translation Services) / a Private Driving Instructor test appointment.

Fee

The driving test form fee for both the commercial and non-commercial vehicles is HK$510.

Before Booking the Driving Tests Online

Application for Driving Test Appointment (End-of-list Appointment)

Before you start the online application, you should have the following items ready:

  • A valid personal digital certificate issued by recognized Certification Authorities or ‘iAM Smart’ account with digital signing for authentication.
  • A credit card (Visa, MasterCard, JCB or UnionPay), a PPS account number with Internet password, or a FPS account for payment. Visa, MasterCard, JCB and UnionPay offer additional security programs to give their cardholders extra protection when they make online payments.  You may need to register in advance with Verified by Visa (VbV), MasterCard® SecureCodeTM or J/SecureTM before online payment.  For details, please check with your credit card issuers.

Note: PPS does not support payment via browsers of mobile devices (including mobile phones and tablets) at present. If you wish to pay by PPS, please change to use desktop computer.

  • A printer to print out a hard copy of the acknowledgement page and appointment letter.  No appointment letter will be sent by post to candidates who submit online application of driving test.  If you do not have a printer at the moment, you can enquire the appointment details and download the appointment letter later via the function of “Enquiry about Reserved / Confirmed Driving Test Appointment” by using the personal digital certificate / iAM Smart account.

Application for Repeater Early Test Appointment 

Before you start the online application, you should have the following items ready:

  • Your appointment letter / driving test form (test result) (TD 553) of your last failed road test.
  • (If you choose to make payment online) A valid personal digital certificate issued by recognized Certification Authorities or ‘iAM Smart’ account with digital signing for authentication.
  • (If you choose to make payment online) A credit card (Visa, MasterCard, JCB or UnionPay), a PPS account number and Internet password, or a FPS account for payment. Visa, MasterCard, JCB and UnionPay offer additional security programs to give their cardholders extra protection when they make online payments.  You may need to register in advance with Verified by Visa (VbV), MasterCard® SecureCodeTM or J/SecureTM before online payment.  For details, please check with your credit card issuers.

Note: PPS does not support payment via browsers of mobile devices (including mobile phones and tablets) at present. If you wish to pay by PPS, please change to use desktop computer.

  • A printer to print out a hard copy of (i) the “Acknowledgement on Repeater Early Test Appointment Reservation” (if you will pay and confirm your reservation by an authorised agent) and (ii) the appointment letter (after payment online). If you do not have a printer at the moment, be sure to jot down the reservation number and make use of the reservation number and the “Enquiry about Reserved / Confirmed Driving Test Appointment” function to (i) view the reservation details of the Repeater Early Test Appointment and then print the “Acknowledgement on Repeater Early Test Appointment Reservation” by the payment due date or (ii) to print the appointment letter before the test.   No appointment letter will be sent by post to candidates who submit online application for driving test.

Application for Postponement / Temporary Cancellation of Driving Test / Change in Test Region

Before you start the online application, you should have the following items ready:

  • Your appointment letter.
  • A valid personal digital certificate issued by recognized Certification Authorities or ‘iAM Smart’ account with digital signing for authentication.
  • (If you need to purchase a new test form) A credit card (Visa, MasterCard, JCB or UnionPay), a PPS account number and Internet password, or a FPS account for payment. Visa, MasterCard, JCB and UnionPay offer additional security programs to give their cardholders extra protection when they make online payments.  You may need to register in advance with Verified by Visa (VbV), MasterCard® SecureCodeTMor J/SecureTM before online payment.  For details, please check with your credit card issuers.

No appointment letter / receipt of temporary cancellation of driving test will be sent by post to candidates who submit online application for Postponement / Temporary Cancellation of Driving Test / Change in Test Region.  If you do not have a printer at the moment, you can enquire the appointment details and download the appointment letter later via the function of “Enquiry about Reserved / Confirmed Driving Test Appointment” by using the personal digital certificate / iAM Smart account.
