Q5. What are the photograph requirements for the application for HKSAR Document of Identity for Visa Purposes?

One recent colour photograph in white background is required for the application (photograph requirements). An application with substandard photograph will not be processed and will be returned to the applicant. Self-service photographic kiosks are provided in all Immigration Branch Offices.

Q6. How can I pay the application fee?

For applications submitted in person, you can pay the application fee by EPS, in cash or by crossed cheque payable to "The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region". For applications submitted by post or via a drop-in box, please enclose a crossed cheque. Post-dated cheques will not be accepted.

Q7. What is the processing time for the application for HKSAR Document of Identity for Visa Purposes?

Normally, the application process will be completed in 10 working days (working days denote Monday to Friday excluding General Holidays) provided that all necessary documents, fee and photograph are received. For applications submitted by post or via drop-in box, an extra 2 to 3 working days may be required for handling formalities. If your previous HKSAR Document of Identity for Visa Purposes is lost, damaged, defaced or is not available, you have to complete form ID645 and should submit the application in person. The processing time may be longer.

You can make an appointment booking starting from the day following the date of issue of the Collection Notice. You can choose a suitable time slot from Monday to Friday at the chosen collection office. The service is free of charge and group booking for a maximum of four applicants with same collection office shown on their Collection Notices is available.

Q10. How can I apply for replacement of HKSAR Document of Identity for Visa Purposes due to Loss?

If you have lost your HKSAR Document of Identity for Visa Purposes (Doc/I), you should report the loss to the Immigration Department.

You should complete the application form (ID 645) and submit your replacement application in person at any one of the Immigration Offices for travel document applications [except the Travel Documents and Nationality (Application) Section]. You may book an appointment through the telephone booking system at

If you lose your HKSAR Doc/I while travelling abroad, you should report the loss to the local police. With the documentary proof of the loss, liaise with the Chinese Diplomatic and Consular Mission in that place and request for replacement of the travel document.
