Interest Classes Sponsored by the Government

If you are interested in learning more about your favourite subjects or hobbies, Hong Kong has a lot to offer. Here you can find out about the variety of high quality, professionally conducted interest classes, which are provided free or for a nominal fee by the Government, ranging from cultural topics to special classes.

Benefiting from a Sponsored Class

Taking part in government-sponsored interest classes, you can broaden your horizon, learn more about Hong Kong, and acquire deeper knowledge about special topics. Most classes are free, with some charging nominal fees or taking refundable deposits.

Cultural Programmes and Classes

A range of cultural programmes and classes are made available to people of all ages and backgrounds by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), the Hong Kong Tourism Board and the 18 District Councils. The LCSD offers such a broad range of activities in all areas of Hong Kong, including classes on dance, music and theatrical arts. A list of all available programmes can be accessed on the following link.

The classes and activities organised by the District Councils tend to be more family centred, but include everything from health promotion days to variety shows and festive events. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn something new in your own district! A list of activities is available on the joint website of the District Councils when you select your district and click on the "DC Activities" link.

Library Extension Activities

Apart from providing a rich and diversified collection for the public, the Hong Kong Public Libraries also regularly organizes educational and recreational programmes to promote the use of library facilities, inculcate life-long reading habits and fully utilize the free access to up-to-date information. These include a variety of programmes such as talks and workshops on reading, literature, culture and healthy lives, as well as user education sessions on library services and resources.

Classes for More Specific Learners

Government sponsored classes are also available for those who would like to develop an interest or some skills in a certain area and want to learn more. The LCSD’s Music Office and the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre both offer various courses, with the Music Office providing instrumental music training for young people and fundamental music training for people of all ages. Trainees of Music Office training programmes can manage their personal information and pay course fees via the Music Office Trainee Portal.
